Common questions
About shift differentials
What is a shift differential?
A shift differential is extra pay for working less-desirable hours — nights, weekends, or holidays. It can be a flat dollar amount per hour (e.g. $3/hr night diff), a percentage of your base rate (e.g. 10% weekend premium), or a flat amount per shift.
How does overtime work with differentials?
Under the FLSA, overtime pay must be calculated using the "regular rate" — which includes shift differentials. This means your OT rate is higher when you've earned differentials during the week. DiffPay uses the FLSA blended-rate method to calculate this correctly.
Who earns shift differentials?
Nurses, paramedics, EMTs, respiratory therapists, surgical techs, pharmacy techs, CNAs, and most healthcare workers who work rotating or non-standard shifts. Manufacturing, public safety, and hospitality workers also commonly earn differentials.

One missed $3/hr night diff on a 12-hour shift is $36 — that covers 9 months of DiffPay Pro. Log every shift, catch every discrepancy.
